Kano REMASAB Pushes for Sustainable Waste Management

The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has reiterated its commitment to sustainable waste management following the conclusion of a two-day workshop on “Unlocking Waste-to-Value Opportunities in Nigeria” held in Kano.
The workshop, which took place at Bristol Palace Hotel, brought together key stakeholders to explore innovative approaches to converting waste into economic value while promoting environmental sustainability.
Representing the Managing Director of REMASAB, Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, Umar Dahiru expressed appreciation to organizers for hosting the event in Kano, noting its relevance to the state’s development priorities.
“This workshop has brought together stakeholders to explore innovative solutions for waste management and create value from waste,” Dahiru said.
He highlighted the significance of initiatives such as the Plastic Recycling and Energy Project (PREP), describing them as critical to boosting the economy and addressing environmental challenges.
Dahiru further noted that the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to adopting innovative waste management strategies across the state.
According to him, ongoing and proposed initiatives include the establishment of a Recycling Village, introduction of school-based Waste Banks, and women-focused empowerment programmes.

He explained that these efforts are designed to reduce waste, create employment opportunities, and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
REMASAB reaffirmed its resolve to work closely with stakeholders to transform waste into wealth and strengthen sustainable practices in the state.
“We will continue to collaborate with relevant partners to implement sustainable waste management practices and unlock the economic potential of waste in Kano,” the agency stated.
Participants at the workshop also highlighted the broader benefits of waste-to-value initiatives, including recycling, energy generation, and job creation.
They called for increased investment in waste management infrastructure, improved policies, and stronger public awareness to scale up such initiatives across Nigeria..
