KanSLAM Engages Journalists on MNCH Funding, Seeks Improved Budget Release in Kano

The Kano State Led Accountability Mechanism (KanSLAM) engaged journalists on issues related to domestic resource mobilization, the timely release of funds, and increased budget allocation for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH), as well as family planning services
The engagement focused on the demographic realities of Kano State, where rapid population growth continues to put pressure on the health sector, particularly services targeting women and children.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Nura Haladu explained that while there are allocations for MNCH in Kano State, challenges persist in the release of these funds, affecting efforts to address maternal mortality, neonatal deaths, stunted growth, and access to family planning services.
“There are allocations for MNCH in Kano, but the key challenge is the release of these funds to ensure we effectively tackle maternal mortality, neonatal deaths, stunted children, and improve family planning services,” he said.
Dr. Haladu added that KanSLAM must identify how allocated resources are utilized, stressing the importance of ensuring that funds budgeted for MNCH are used for their intended purposes.
“We want to identify how these resources can be properly utilized and ensure that what is allocated is actually implemented,” he stated.
In his remarks, Safiyanu Lawal Bichi explained that the purpose of the engagement was to identify the challenges behind the lack of fund release and examine how it affects service delivery at healthcare facilities.
“The goal is to understand the barriers to fund release and how this impacts services at hospitals, especially those affecting women and children,” he noted.
Representative from Aminci Radio Kano Aishat Ahmad emphasizing the need to track the full chain of MNCH budget allocations and releases to improve accountability and efficiency.
She also called for increased funding for family planning services in the state, noting its importance in reducing maternal and child health challenges.
Furthermore, Suyudi Isah Jibril from fasaha fm stressed the need to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated to MNCH and family planning to guarantee better outcomes.
Pulse Time Nigeria reports that the meeting was held at Express Radio Kano and brought together journalists from different media organizations, including Aminci Radio, Pulse Time Nigeria, The Times Hausa Online News, Voice of Nigeria, Abubakar Rimin TV, Tech Fasaha FM, and Guarantee Radio, among others.
The engagement concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between the media, government, and civil society to ensure improved funding processes and better health outcomes for women and children in Kano State.
