Kano State-Led Accountability Mechanism (KanSLAM) has issued a passionate call for urgent action to address health inequalities across Kano State,As the world marks World Health Day 2025.
This was contained in a statement Signed by Pharm. Maimuna Yakubu, Co-chair, KanSLAM (CSO) issued to the media on Monday.
KanSLAM notes that despite progress in some areas, deep disparities in healthcare access persist across urban and rural communities.
“A child born in rural Kano should have the same survival chances as one born in the city.”
The accountability mechanism highlighted concerning statistics, including the fact that 65% of Kano’s maternal deaths occur in hard-to-reach rural areas, while only 30% of primary health centers have the required staff and medicines.
KanSLAM is calling for three immediate actions: First, equitable distribution of health workers across all 44 local governments. Second, increased budget allocation and timely release of funds for primary healthcare. Third, community-led monitoring of health services to ensure accountability.
World Health Day reminds us that health is a right, not a privilege. We urge the Kano State Government to make 2025 the year we finally bridge these gaps and build a fairer, healthier Kano for all.
