Kano Cancer Treatment Center Launches New Brachytherapy Service, Urges Patients to Seek Care

The Kano Cancer Treatment Center (KCTC) has officially launched its Brachytherapy service, marking the immediate commencement of advanced cancer treatment in Kano State and a major boost to healthcare delivery in the region.
The announcement was made during a press briefing by the Director General of the Center, Dr. Nafisa Abdu, who described the development as a significant milestone for cancer care in Kano and Nigeria at large.
Dr. Abdu said the new service would greatly benefit patients, especially those battling cervical cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers among women.
She explained that Brachytherapy is a modern form of cancer treatment where a small radiation source is placed directly inside or very close to the cancer in the body, allowing doctors to target the disease more effectively.
She added that the therapy is commonly used for cervical cancer, which affects the womb of women, as well as prostate cancer in men, breast cancer, and some head and neck cancers.
“For instance, a woman with cervical cancer can receive treatment directly in the affected part, helping to destroy the cancer faster and with fewer side effects,” she explained.
Dr. Abdu noted that with the availability of this service in Kano, patients no longer need to travel long distances to access such specialized care.
She urged residents to patronize the center and seek medical attention early, stressing that early diagnosis remains key to successful treatment.
The Director General also warned against seeking help from unqualified traditional healers, noting that such actions often worsen patients’ conditions and may lead to tragic outcomes.
“Patients should visit hospitals early before the situation becomes critical,” she advised.
She called on philanthropists and well-meaning individuals to support cancer patients, particularly those who cannot afford treatment.
He emphasized that community support would help reduce the burden of cancer and improve survival rates across the state.
