Deputy Governor: Lawmaker Urges Yusuf to Ignore APC Pressure, Choose Running Mate Independentl

A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Tsanyawa and Ghari constituencies, Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai, has called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to independently select his deputy without interference from APC Barau and Ganduje Camp
Gwarmai made the call during an interview with Aminci Radio on Sunday, stressing that allowing external political interests to influence the decision could create division within the state.
He noted that the governor had earlier demonstrated political maturity and inclusiveness by engaging key APC stakeholders, including former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Senator Barau Jibrin, and other party figures.
According to him, despite the governor’s constitutional right to appoint his deputy, he chose to consult widely and even gave APC leaders the opportunity to present three candidates for consideration.
Gwarmai, however, expressed concern that the process has led to internal disagreements within the APC, with different factions unable to agree on a single candidate.
He explained that while some party members are backing Sule Garo, others are opposing the move, creating a clear division along political lines within the party.
“If Sule Garo is selected, those loyal to Barau may not support him, and if someone from Barau’s camp is chosen, Ganduje’s supporters may resist. This will only deepen division and weaken the political structure,” Gwarmai said.
He warned that such divisions, if not properly managed, could have serious consequences for the political stability of Kano State, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.
The lawmaker further stated that the current situation could lead to unnecessary political tension, which may affect governance and development efforts in the state.
Gwarmai advised the governor to take full control of the decision-making process by selecting a deputy he trusts and can work with effectively, rather than relying on recommendations from a divided political bloc.
He also urged Governor Yusuf to conduct proper investigations and consultations to ensure that the final choice promotes unity rather than conflict.
In addition, the lawmaker appealed to members of the APC in Kano State to set aside their differences and work together in the interest of peace and development.
He emphasized that unity within the party is essential not only for political success but also for the overall progress of Kano State and its people.
