Brown Pegion Resources in collaboration with Citizens for Development and Education (CDE) jointly organized one Day training for Kano journalists, focusing on ethics and professionalism. emphasizing knowledge-based reportage, adherence to media laws and ethics, and global standards.
The training with the theme: ‘Promoting ethics and professionalism in journalism through knowledge-based reportage’ was designed to strengthen journalists’ capacity to carry out their work professionally.
Ambassador Ibrahim Waiya, CDE’s Executive Director, stressed journalists’ societal responsibility and the need for creativity, innovation and inquisitiveness.
He said journalists have greater responsibility in society which comes with a lot of challenges, encouraging the participants to adhere to the principles of the profession.
According to him, the world has turned into a global village hence the need for journalists to explore research, investigation, and expand their horizons through networking, knowledge, and skills.
He highlighted that by adding value to their work, the media can exhibit professionalism in their reportage by capturing and disseminating it to the public.
“We want the media in Kano to build their careers on the international stage.
Dr. Bala A. Muhammad of the Department of Mass Communication at Bayero University Kano presented a paper titled, ‘Promoting Ethics and Professionalism in Journalism Through Knowledge-based Reportage.
He identified knowing the laws and ethics of the media as critical in the practice of the profession.
“These are essential in the successful practice of knowledge-based media work we, as journalists, must always strive for more knowledge which will lead to excellence.”
Bala posited that to eradicate ignorance based on reporting, a journalist should be fair, objective, bold, independent, and know media law and ethics
The TIMES HAUSA reported that Dr. Nuhu Idris (Bayero University Kano) discussed Nigeria’s governance structure, functions and limitations for effective reportage.
