The National Population Commission (NPC) in Kano State has embarked on a verbal and social autopsy (VASA) to investigate the root causes of under-5 mortality and maternal mortality in the state.
The federal commissioner of the National population Commission, Kano state , Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, disclosed this at a press conference held on Sunday to marks the beginning of verbal and social autopsy (VASA) in Kano state.
The verbal autopsy (VASA) aimed at gaining deeper insight into the root causes of under 5 mortality and the pregnant women,also provide a pathway to save lives.
Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa explained the purpose of the research, to find out the prevalence of pregnant women and children under the age of 5 so that the concerned authorities can use the figures to solve the problems.
“Child and maternal mortality remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, Despite advancement,too many young lives are still lost ,”
“VASA study allows us to understand the circumstances around these losses, including social, culture and healthcare related Factors”
He added that this type of investigation is conducted at the NPC every Four year.The findings will be submitted to the federal government to inform policy makers and interventions aimed at reducing under-5 mortality and maternal deaths to take action in Kano State.
“Through interview with Families and communities we will gain a fuller picture of these tragic event and identify concrete action to prevent them in the future”
Aminci Radio reported that the officials of the National population Commission NPC have already arrived from the Federal territory Abuja and began conducting research in 19 local governments, including Ajingi, Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Bichi, Kunchi, Tsanyawa, Dambata, Sumaila, and Gaya.
