2027: Kawu condemns political thuggery, drug abuse during campaigns.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, has condemned the use of political thugs, weapons and illicit drugs during election campaigns.
Kawu described the practice as a threat to democracy, saying political activities should be driven by issues, policies and the interests of the people rather than violence and substance abuse.
The senator spoke on Sunday while presenting his scorecard to journalists at a forum organised by the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in collaboration with his office.
The forum, titled “One-On-One With Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD: Reviewing the 2023 Kano South Campaign Promises Ahead of 2027,” was organised to review his performance in the constituency and assess projects and interventions undertaken since his election.
Kawu said he would not encourage the use of weapons or illicit drugs as part of his political activities, stressing that such practices could undermine the electoral process and threaten peaceful participation.
“I will not encourage the use of weapons or illicit drugs as part of my political activities,” he said.
He urged politicians and their supporters to pursue campaigns based on issues and peaceful engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
The senator’s position comes amid growing concerns over the relationship between drug abuse, youth violence and political thuggery in Kano ahead of the next general elections. Kano authorities have also intensified efforts to tackle drug abuse and thuggery in the state.
Kawu also used the forum to account for his stewardship and highlight interventions undertaken in Kano South since 2023, as part of efforts to assess the implementation of his campaign promises.
