Kano Govt Delegation Visits Portugal Ahead of Light Rail Project

The Kano State Government has dispatched a high-level delegation to Lisbon, Portugal, as part of preparations for the proposed Kano Light Rail Project aimed at improving urban transportation across the state.
The delegation is led by the Commissioner of the Kano State Ministry of Transport, Haruna Isa Dederi, alongside the Chairman of the Kano Line Resuscitation Committee, Saidu Abdullahi Shuaibu.

According to a statement issued by the Information Officer of Kano Line, Ibrahim Ado Sabari, the delegation is currently on a study tour to major transport institutions in Lisbon and Almada to explore modern rail transport systems.
The visit forms part of strategic steps initiated under the leadership of Abba Kabir Yusuf to establish a modern rail network within Kano metropolis and surrounding areas.
Officials from the Ministry of Transport and Kano Line are engaging with leading transport and engineering companies, including Mota‑Engil and MTS – Metro Transportes do Sul, to study rail infrastructure development and operational systems.
The delegation is also expected to examine maintenance procedures, safety standards, and sustainable financing models used in modern rail transport systems.
The state government said the study tour is aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring that the Kano Light Rail Project aligns with global best practices in urban rail planning and implementation.
It added that discussions during the visit will also explore opportunities for technical partnerships, knowledge exchange, and investment collaboration to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved N1 trillion for the establishment of the Kano Light Rail Project as part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Kano Light Rail Project is expected to boost economic activities by creating employment opportunities, facilitating trade and commerce, and improving access to major residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
Upon completion, the rail system is projected to ease traffic congestion within the metropolis while promoting environmentally friendly transportation for residents of Kano State.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a modern, reliable, and efficient rail transport system that meets international standards and addresses the growing mobility needs of citizens.
