TUC Kano Re-elects Leadership, Amplifies Call for Workers’ Welfare Amid Economic Strain

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Kano State Council, has successfully concluded its First Quadrennial Delegates Conference, culminating in the re-election of Comrade Mubarak Buba Yerima as State Chairman and a powerful renewed advocacy for improved worker welfare and government intervention in Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Held under the theme, “Workers’ Welfare in a Dynamic Economy: Achieving Strategic Partnership, Organizing, Decent Work in Line with Global Best Practices,” the conference served as a platform for robust deliberation on the pressing issues facing the Nigerian workforce.

In his welcome address, the re-elected Chairman, Comrade Mubarak Buba Yerima, framed the union’s struggles within the nation’s economic context. He identified the removal of the petroleum subsidy on May 29, 2023, as a pivotal moment that drastically worsened economic strain, with workers on the pre-adjustment minimum wage being the hardest hit.

“Despite the challenges inherited by this council, we quickly developed and implemented a strategic plan aimed at repositioning TUC Kano for improved efficiency,” Yerima stated. He reaffirmed the union’s unwavering commitment to championing fairness, equitable wages, and better working conditions, declaring unity as the Congress’s greatest asset.

The conference garnered significant commendation from key labour stakeholders. The National President of TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, represented by the Secretary General, Comrade Nuhu Toro, praised the Kano State Council’s dedication. Similar accolades came from the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kano State, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, and the Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), among other affiliates.

A major highlight was the pledge from the Kano State Government. The Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, represented by the Permanent Secretary for Human Resources and Development, Alhaji Salahuddin, committed to supporting TUC Kano in acquiring a permanent office, operational vehicles, and other essential facilities to enhance its operational capacity.

· Chairperson: Maryam Yahya Musa (ASUSS)

In his victory remarks, Chairman Yerima highlighted the achievements since 2022 and assured members of a strengthened commitment to union growth and worker welfare.

The conference concluded with a consensus on fostering stronger collaboration between the TUC and the Kano State Government, leaving delegates with renewed optimism for a future of promoted workers’ rights and improved wellbeing.
