Association of people living with hypertension Equips Leaders to Tackle Hypertension Crisis in Kano.
The GAMMUN Centre for Care Development Nigeria has concluded a two-day intensive training for leaders of the Association of People Living with Hypertension .
The workshop, held under the Kano Hypertension Advocacy Initiative (KHAI), aimed to strengthen the organisation’s capacity for strategic planning, resource mobilization, and advocacy.
In his opening address, Project Director, Tulari Tine, emphasising Gammun mission to amplify community-led advocacy and increase public awareness about hypertension.

The workshop featured key sessions on stakeholder engagement, leadership development, and the strategic planning process, equipping participants with practical skills for effective collaboration and championing community-based health interventions.
A major highlight was the presentation by Professor Emmanuel Alhassan, Country Coordinator of the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI). Professor Alhassan facilitated an in-depth discussion on developing a clear organisational identity through Vision, Mission, and Values, combined with a thorough analysis of Nigeria’s hypertension landscape.
His session underscored the importance of strategic alignment and evidence-based advocacy as foundational pillars for any successful health-focused organisation.
Further empowering the participants, the training covered essential operational topics such as financial resource management, strategic planning concepts, and the power of networking. These modules were designed to improve internal coordination and build the operational capacity needed for the Association to thrive.
The President of APLWH, Alhaji Shehu Ishaq, supported by HTN Ambassador Hajiya Aisha Abdulqadir, presented group work that outlined actionable plans for strengthening the Association. Their presentations reflected a deepened understanding of the training and a clear roadmap for future activities.
The training, which brought together the Association’s executive members, Board members, and dedicated Hypertension (HTN) Ambassadors, focused on building a sustainable, patient-led response to the growing public health challenge of hypertension in Kano State and Nigeria
