Northwest University Kano Shines at NUGA 2025, Secures Three Medals in Impressive Outing

The Northwest University Kano has made an impressive mark at the ongoing 2025 Nigeria University Games (NUGA), hosted by the University of Jos, showcasing a powerful blend of determination, skill, and competitive spirit that has announced the institution as an emerging force in university sports.
Despite being a relatively young institution in the NUGA arena, NWU’s athletes demonstrated exceptional commitment as they battled against more established universities from across the country. Their hard work and dedication culminated in a total of three medals, a significant achievement that underscores the university’s growing investment in sports development and talent nurturing.
The medal haul, earned across three distinct sporting categories, highlights the versatility and promise of the university’s athletes.
The breakthrough came from the martial arts arena, where Musa Muhammad delivered a stunning performance to clinch the Gold medal in the Taekwondo 58kg category. Not to be outdone, Aliyu Umar Aliyu fought his way to a Bronze Medal in the Judo -100kg event, demonstrating grit and technique. Adding a strategic triumph to the tally, Esther Momoh secured a Bronze Medal in the intellectually demanding Chess Event.
The team’s success was bolstered by the pivotal presence and guidance of key officials. Leading the charge was Prof. Abubakar Salisu Garba, the Chairman of the Northwest University Sports Advisory Committee. Renowned for his deep commitment to youth development and university sports, Prof. Garba played a central role in guiding and motivating the athletes throughout the competition.
His presence, alongside other dedicated officials, ensured smooth coordination, proper welfare, and strategic support, which greatly contributed to the team’s morale and impressive performance.
“The entire management, coaching staff, and university community are immensely proud of our athletes,” a representative stated. “This performance is not just about the medals; it’s a testament to our belief in holistic education and the potential of our youth. We see this as a strong foundation upon which we will build for even greater success in future editions of the games.”
Beyond the podium finishes, the university’s participation at NUGA UNIJOS 2025 provided a valuable platform for its athletes to gain national exposure, build confidence, and deepen their competitive experience.
