KNCDC Raises Alarm Over Dengue Fever Outbreak in Sokoto
The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has issued an urgent public health advisory confirming an outbreak of Dengue Fever in the neighbouring Sokoto State.
In a statement released on Monday, the Director General of the KNCDC, Dr. Muhammad Adamu Abbas, stated, this development, while currently without fatalities in Sokoto, warrants increased vigilance and collective action from our community.
Dr. Abbas further emphasized that the threat is amplified by the significant daily business movement between Kano and Sokoto, as well as local environmental conditions that are highly favourable for the breeding of the Aedes mosquito, which is the primary vector for the disease.
He was quick to reassure the public, however, stating, “There is currently no immediate threat to Kano State, but the nature of public health demands we take proactive and decisive measures for prevention.

Providing details on the disease, Dr. Abbas explained that, the“Dengue Fever is a viral infection spread through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It presents with symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and severe joint and muscle pains. While there is no specific antiviral treatment, early medical attention is crucial and significantly reduces the risk of complications.”
On the measures The KNCDC is taking, the Director General outlined ,
“We have immediately heightened surveillance across all health facilities and are working closely with Rapid Response Teams at state and local government levels to monitor and promptly respond to any suspected cases. Furthermore, we have intensified vector control activities in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.”
Dr. Abbas strongly urged all residents to take personal responsibility, advising, “The public must eliminate mosquito breeding sites by disposing of stagnant water and cleaning water containers regularly. I also advise everyone to sleep under insecticide-treated nets, use repellents, and seek immediate medical care if they experience symptoms like fever or rashes, while avoiding self-medication.”
He also called for public cooperation in information sharing, adding, “We must all be responsible and share only verified information from official sources. Spreading unverified claims can cause unnecessary panic and hinder our response efforts.”
