UNICEF Urges Kano State Government to Implement Child Protection Law
As Nigeria celebrates Children’s Day today, May 27, 2025, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is calling on the Kano State Government to implement the Child Protection Law enacted in 2023.
In an interview with Aminci Radio, Samuel Kaalu, Communication Specialist at UNICEF Kano Field Office, emphasized the need for effective implementation to protect children’s rights in the state.
Samuel kaalu explain the aims of Kano State Child Protection Law , as to prevent child abuse, neglect, and exploitation, while promoting access to education, healthcare, and protection from harmful practices.
According to kaalu Kano face challenges With millions of children out of school, which is prevalent in the state, often leaves children without access to proper education and healthcare. Malnutrition is also a pressing issue, with many children suffering from hunger and related health problems.
However,the number of out-of-school children in Kano State is alarming, with approximately 989,234 children not accessing education. UNICEF has expressed grave concern over the situation, emphasizing the importance of education in preventing child exploitation and abuse.
Mean while Pulse Time Nigeria reports that recently in 2024 Over 300,000 children in Kano State are yet to be immunized against childhood killer diseases, which represents about 55% of the 600,000 children without immunization in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states
By implementing the Child Protection Law, the Kano State Government can take a significant step towards protecting the rights and welfare of its children. As Kaalu emphasized,
“The children of Kano deserve more than words – they deserve the full implementation of the law that was written in their name.”
