Accountability Crusade: Aqibu Hamisu Urges Nigerians to Demand Transparency in Constituency Projects.
Aqibu Hamisu, Civil society organizations tracking budget, has called on Nigerians to hold their elected representatives accountable for the implementation of constituency projects. With the National Assembly inserting 11,122 projects worth N6.93 trillion into the 2025 budget.
Explaining this to Aminci Radio today in an interview concerning Constituency project inserted to the budget by National Assembly.
Malam Aqibu Hamisu emphasized the need for citizens to scrutinize their lawmakers’ actions and ensure they prioritize national interests over personal gains.
As the 2025 budget has been marred by controversy, with BudgIT, a civic-tech organization, revealing that nearly 12.5% of the N54.99 trillion budget is allocated to questionable projects inserted by lawmakers.
These projects, often designed to serve personal interests rather than the public good, have sparked outrage among Nigerians.
Hamisu call Nigerians to refuse to vote for lawmakers who fail to deliver on their promises.
He emphasized that credibility should be the primary consideration when electing representatives, rather than monetary inducements. this stance is supported by experts who argue that constituency projects should be designed to deliver critical infrastructure and services to grassroots communities, not line the pockets of lawmakers.
Giving example with the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, similar instances of budget padding occurred, but the current government’s response has been lackluster. He said
“Therefore Citizens must demand transparency and accountability from their lawmakers regarding constituency projects.
“Voters should prioritize electing representatives with credibility over those who offer monetary inducements.”He said
“By holding our representatives accountable, we can promote good governance and ensure that constituency projects serve the nation’s best interests.” Aqibu added
