FIRS Honours Kano Commissioner for Local Government 5 Council Chairmen for Financial Prudence, Fiscal Responsibility

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has recognised the Kano State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, five Council Chairmen, among other awardees, for their outstanding demonstration of fiscal responsibility, timely and regular payment of taxes. This prestigious award was presented during a ceremony held at the Kano Government Business Office and Audit to mark FIRS Customer Week.
The FIRS State Administrator for Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina, Mrs Sani, commended the taxpayers in federal, state, and local governments for their compliance and prompt payment of taxes.
“You are our pride and are rightly considered the force that drives our economy and national development,” she said.
She noted that the Kano GBO team achieved 92% of the annual target as of the end of September 2025, which forms part of the national achievement of 24 trillion.

The FIRS State Administrator further commended the awardees for their dedication to meeting their tax obligations, noting that the timely and regular payment of tax is crucial to supporting the nation’s development.
The awardees are Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushe’u Soja, the ALGON Chairperson and Chairlady of Tudun Wada Local Government; Dr Abdulhadi Zubairu Chula, Vice Chairperson ALGON Kano South and Chairman Ajingi Local Government; Hon. Suraj Ibrahim Imam, PRO ALGON and Chairman Dala Local Government; Hon. Abdullahi Ghali Shitu, Chairman Kumbotso Local Government; and Hon. Sagir Usman Umar, Chairman Gabasawa Local Government.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, expressed his gratitude to FIRS for the recognition.
He emphasised that paying taxes is a civic responsibility and a social obligation that every citizen should take seriously.
He noted that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is committed to prioritising fiscal responsibility and good governance and directed them to ensure prompt payment of taxes.
The Commissioner urged citizens to view tax payment as a means of contributing to the nation’s development and enhancing the lives of their fellow citizens. By paying taxes, individuals support the government’s efforts to provide essential services and infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.
He advised FIRS to consider implementing public social responsibility by constructing roads, schools, or sponsoring workshops and seminars as a way of appreciation and encouragement for voluntary payment of taxes, and to encourage other Council Chairmen to emulate the good example set by the awardees and prioritise their tax obligations.
Earlier, the State Monitor Kano Government Business Office, Fatihu Umar Adamu, noted that the Commissioner and the Council Chairmen have demonstrated their commitment to paying their taxes timely and regularly, contributing to the nation’s revenue, and supporting the delivery of public goods and services.
The FIRS hopes that this recognition will encourage other local governments to emulate the good example set by the awardees.
Speaking on behalf of the awarded Council Chairmen, the ALGON Chairperson and Chairlady of Tudun Wada Local Government, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushe’u Soja, said this is the first time in history that 5 Council Leaders have been honoured for prompt payment of taxes and settlement of inherited debt from the previous administration, due to transparency and political will.
She assured that the number of awardees will be increased in subsequent events, as the Governor directed them to ensure prompt payment of taxes and they were in compliance.
